Jack Stein is the Chef Director of Rick Stein’s Seafood Restaurants, and leads their meal kit service Stein’s at Home. Jack, the middle son of Jill and Rick Stein, has worked in restaurants worldwide – but has eventually settled in his native Cornwall.
Jack is a familiar face on television, with or without his dad (award-winning UK famous chef Rick Stein) or his brothers (Edward and Charlie Stein). He has filmed several successful food series such as Born to Cook: Jack Stein Down Under, as well as Wine, Dine and Stein and Jack Stein: Inside the Box. Jack also makes regular appearances on Ch4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch and has appeared as the expert chef on every series of ITV’s Cooking with the Stars.
Jack’s cookbook, Jack Stein’s World on a Plate, was published in 2018.
Jack began his career in the hospitality industry early, spending his school holidays working as a kitchen porter and then waiter for The Seafood Restaurant kitchen. Jack then studied at Cardiff University, completing a BSc in Psychology before going on to do a Master’s in Ancient History. However, the pull of the kitchen was just too strong.
Upon completing his Master’s in 2003, Jack re-entered the family business as a Commis Chef at The Seafood Restaurant, before becoming Sous Chef at Rick Stein’s Café. Jack then went to Paris to work at La Régalade, which ignited a passion for travel and a period of stage placements all over the world. During this time, Jack travelled to Australia for an extended stay at Tetsuya’s in Sydney, before exploring Asia – particularly Japan.
Upon his return to Padstow in Cornwall, Jack soon became Executive Development Chef across the Stein Group. Since becoming Chef Director in 2017, Jack has launched a ‘Cook with Jack Stein’ course at Rick Stein’s Cookery School and the Stein’s at Home meal kit service. Jack was voted Best Chef at the 2023 Food Magazine Reader Awards.
Jack has filmed several successful TV series in locations worldwide. Wine, Dine and Stein, co-hosted with Jack’s brother and sommelier Charlie, saw the two spend a day on each of the 12 wine farms that make up the Durbanville Wine Valley in South Africa. In Born to Cook: Jack Stein Down Under, made for SBS and UKTV food, Jack and Rick Stein work their way through Western Australia’s southwest, meeting the producers at the helm of the food revolution.
In Jack Stein: Inside the Box, Jack travels to different parts of the globe to present a variety of British dishes and find out what locals think of British food. Jack has also featured regularly on UK TV shows such as Ch4’s Steph’s Packed Lunch, BBC’s Saturday Kitchen and Ch4’s Sunday Brunch.
Jack is a Mentor Chef on ITV’s Cooking with the Stars and has been for many consecutive years.
Jack’s cookbook, Jack Stein’s World on a Plate, was published by Bloomsbury in July 2018. The book was inspired by Jack’s culinary experience from working in restaurants around the world, as well as his passion for British produce. This cookbook contains 100 easy-to-follow recipes, including dishes such as chilli crab (using the very finest Cornish crab), Szechuan-style pigeon, hot and sour Sumatran soup, and XO clams.
Jack puts on lively chef demonstrations for food festivals across the UK including Rock Oyster Festival, Ideal Home Show, Feasty Festival, Caephilly Food Festival and many more. Jack will front the opening of ‘Steins at Cheltenham’ at the Cheltenham Festival in March 2026, bringing the celebrated Cornish hospitality of the Stein family to Jump racing’s most prestigious event.
He is also been a brand ambassador for the St Austell Brewery and MicroSalt, a new low sodium salt.
