Hamza Yassin is a wildlife cameraman, TV presenter, and conservation advocate whose work has made him a familiar face on some of the most high-profile natural history programmes in the UK . Born in Sudan in 1990, he moved to the UK as a child and later studied Zoology with Conservation at Bangor University before completing a master’s degree in Biological Imaging and Photography.
His career began behind the camera, where he built experience on BBC nature productions and learned from established wildlife filmmaker Jesse Wilkinson. He has filmed sequences for major programmes including Springwatch, The Hunt, Wild Isles, Predator, and Animal Park, capturing incredible nature and wildlife on his films. That hands-on filming background gave him a strong reputation as both a practical field cameraman and a knowledgeable naturalist.
Hamza’s cinematography is closely tied to his love of birds, habitats, and conservation, and he is a skilled and passionate ornithologist and bird nest recorder. Living on Scotland’s west coast gives him daily access to the landscapes and wildlife that inspire his work, and he has used that setting to produce documentary material about Scottish nature. His visually compelling storytelling aims to make wildlife feel accessible, exciting, and important to protect.
DML Talent first approached Hamza after seeing him on BBC’s the One Show. His potential as a presenter was instantly obvious and the character “Ranger Hamza” was created and resulted in the successful CBeebies’ series Let’s Go for a Walk, Ranger Hamza’s Eco Quest and Hamza Loves Animals.
Hamza was also the presenter and cameraman for the one-off Channel 4 documentary Scotland: My Life in the Wild, which was about Hamza’s own life in the Scottish Highlands and the wildlife that lives there. In a four-part follow-up series called Scotland: Escape to the Wilderness, Hamza guided celebrity companions on journeys through western and eastern Scotland and the Highlands.
He continues his appearances on Countryfile and his TV specials for the brand are top rating gaining over 3.5 million viewers. His public profile rose further after he competed in and won Strictly Come Dancing in 2022 with his dancing partner Jowita, but his core identity remains rooted in wildlife filmmaking.
Hamza’s latest series on BBC1 titled Hamza’s Hidden Wild Isles saw him travel across the UK over a year, uncovering the incredible hidden wildlife all around us. The series garnered great acclaim and impressive viewing figures of 5.12 million. In 2024, Hamza showcased his infectious passion for birds in his BBC One documentary ‘Hamza: Strictly Birds of Prey’ which also received 5-star reviews and over 3.8 million viewers.
In 2023, Hamza’s first book, Be a Birder: The joy of birdwatching and how to get started, was published by Gaia, Octopus Books. In the book, Hamza shares his stories of birdwatching over the years and teaches beginner birders his personal tips and tricks to get started in this fascinating hobby that is so close to his heart. The book was nominated for a Wainwright Prize in 2024.
Hamza’s second book, Hamza’s Wild World, was published by MacMillan Children’s Books in 2024. It’s packed with fun and fascinating animal facts and uses a dyslexic-friendly layout, made in consultation with Dyslexia Scotland. It was shortlisted for a Wainwright Prize and for Book of the Year in Children’s Non-fiction at the British Book Awards 2025. The book was also shortlisted for the ALCS Educational Writers’ Award and received a huge amount of praise from the judges.
In 2025, Hamza’s book Homeward Bound: The Joy of Nature and My Life Outdoors was published by Gaia, Octopus Books. This book covers Hamza’s inspiring journey, sharing his adventures and inspiring readers to connect with the great outdoors.
In 2026, Hamza went on tour with his incredible live show My Life Behind the Lens. The show takes the audience through his travels, life as a cameraman and all the challenges and fun that brings. Hamza has hosted events such as the Animal Action Awards and delivered keynote talks, panels events and Q+As for events at Hampton Court, Edinburgh Science Festival, Cheltenham, Haye, Moffatt Eagle Festival and more. He is the Ambassador for the Camping and Caravan Club.
